Confirmed: All Bon-Ton Stores Closing

YORK, Pa. (EYT) — Bon-Ton will be closing all of its stores including nearby locations in Cranberry, DuBois, Indiana, and Warren.

Headquartered in York, Pennsylvania, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Bon-Ton Inc. had been working with U.S. mall owners to secure a bid that would have kept open a large portion of Bon-Ton locations; however, those efforts have failed.

The only remaining bidders were proposing to liquidate the company, and the group that won the bid was Los Angeles-based Great American Group, New York-based Tiger Capital Group, and a group of Bon-Ton debtholders.

According to a published article on BizTime.com, the deal with the buyers will close at the latest on Thursday, April 19. A U.S. bankruptcy judge is considering the case today, as the deal still needs final court approval.

According to newly filed court documents, the buyers will have until August 31 to complete going out of business sales for the company’s roughly 250 stores, which includes the Bon-Ton, Bergner’s, Boston Store, Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s, and Younkers nameplates.

Retailers have struggled amid the current industry disruption from low-margin discounters such as Walmart Inc. and the increasing popularity of online shopping, dominated by Amazon.com.

Nationwide, the Bon-Ton has over 22,000 employees.
