One Man Injured in Saturday Morning Crash on Route 322

ELK TWP., Pa. (EYT) — One man was transported by ambulance following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 322 in Elk Township Saturday morning.

According to police, around 9:25 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 71-year-old Melvin W. Kapp of Shippenville was operating a 2000 Subaru Outback, attempting to turn left onto U.S. 322 from State Route 4013 (Pine City Road).

At the same time, 29-year-old Lane E. Bowser of Knox was operating a 2004 GM Yukon, traveling west in the right lane of U.S. 322.

Police say Kapp began pulling onto U.S. 322 in front of Bowser. Bowser applied the brakes and steered onto the right shoulder of U.S. 322 in an attempt to miss Kapp’s vehicle.

The front end of Bowser’s vehicle struck the rear of Kapp’s vehicle. Bowser’s vehicle continued to travel approximately 75 feet northwest of U.S. 322 and struck an embankment before coming to final rest.

Kapp’s vehicle turned counterclockwise and came to final rest facing northeast on the westbound shoulder of U.S. 322.

Kapp then moved his vehicle off of the roadway to exchange information.

Bowser, Kapp, and Kapp’s passenger — 56-year-old Stanley A. Bashline of Shippenville — were all wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and were not injured.

Bowser’s passenger — 20-year-old Eric B. McMillin of Oil City — was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported to UPMC Northwest by Shippenville-Elk Volunteer Ambulance Service for treatment of suspected minor injuries.

Kapp was cited for a traffic violaton.
