JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Clarion women’s soccer team dropped a close decision on the road on Wednesday, falling by a 1-0 score to Pitt-Johnstown at Point Stadium.

The Golden Eagles (2-7, 1-7 PSAC) will look to rebound on Saturday when they host Bloomsburg for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

The Mountain Cats scored in the 85th minute of action to break a scoreless deadlock, with Sam Roberts taking a through-ball from Kyra Watkins and knocking it past Brigid Stermel for the win. Stermel had been immaculate to that point, making four saves and keeping Pitt-Johnstown at bay.

Clarion had the better of chances, totaling 20 shots and putting 10 on net. The Golden Eagles attempted four corner kicks to Pitt-Johnstown’s two, but goalkeeper Leigh Appolonia proved to be a tough match.

The Golden Eagles had two early chances, with Appolonia stopping a chance from Mackenzie Sheldon in the fourth minute and Dani McNally just missing on two attempts in the 20th minute.

There was another flurry in the 77th minute, starting with an Alice Fernald shot that was saved by Appolonia. McNally positioned herself to get another crack at the ball, but it sailed wide left. Eight minutes later the Mountain Cats scored to take the 1-0 lead. Clarion enjoyed a late corner and Andie Hill took a shot on net, but Appolonia stopped it as UPJ held on for the win.
