NEW BETHLEHEM, Pa. (EYT) — The Climax Tunnel recently opened to hiking and biking enthusiasts following a lengthy restoration project.
The Climax Tunnel sits at mile 17 of the 41-mile Redbank Valley Trail.
For over a century, freight trains crossing over the Redbank Valley passed through the Climax Tunnel. However, when the railroad left, the tunnel deteriorated.
After an extensive restoration project, the Climax Tunnel is now open to bike and foot traffic as part of the scenic trail, making it the first of Pennsylvania’s Top Ten Trail Gaps to be closed.
