New Bethlehem Woman Accused of Stealing Cash from Employer

NEW BETHLEHEM BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) — A New Bethlehem woman is facing a felony theft charge after she allegedly stole money from a local business where she was employed.

According to court documents, on December 5, the New Bethlehem Borough Police Department filed criminal charges against 38-year-old Kristin Nicole McGiffin, of New Bethlehem.

Police say that while McGiffin was employed at a New Bethlehem Borough business, she stole money from the cash register.

She faces a first-degree felony charge of Theft By Unlawful Taking-Movable Property.

According to a criminal complaint, Chief Robert Malnofsky, of the New Bethlehem Borough Police Department, was requested to investigate a theft that occurred at a business on Broad Street in New Bethlehem Borough.

Chief Malnofsky met with the manager of the business who related that they had an employee, identified as Kristin Nicole McGiffin, who stole money from the business. The manager stated that McGiffin had been hired as a cashier and began working on April 23, 2018, and left the employment on July 6, 2018.

According to the complaint, after McGiffin’s training was complete and she began to work by herself, the manager started to notice suspicious things McGiffin was doing and began watching her.

Chief Malnofsky viewed some of the paperwork from the transactions, as well as some of the video footage which showed McGiffin voiding out transactions of purchases and putting the money in the cash register.

The complaint notes that at the end of the day, her cash drawer was usually balanced.

Chief Malnofsky spoke with the business owner about the incidents, and the business owner requested charges against McGiffin and/or restitution.

After learning that McGiffin was on probation, Chief Malnofsky then reached out to Clarion County Probation.

According to the complaint, McGiffin gave a written statement confessing to the theft of money from her former employer. In the statement, she related that she was not sure how much money she took.

A preliminary arraignment for McGiffin is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 19, in front of Magisterial District Judge Jeffrey C. Miller.
