Robert “Bob” W. Ungren

ThumbnailRobert “Bob” W. Ungren, 92, formerly of Franklin, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at his home.

Born on October 25, 1926, in Oil City to the late Carl and Marion (Pratt) Ungren. He was married to the former Joan Hegedus; she survives him.

He proudly served his country during World War II from 1944 to 1946, where he was Honorably Discharged as a Radioman 3rd Class USN. For his service, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Area Medal, and the Victory Medal.

Bob attended multiple colleges throughout the years and received his Bachelors of Science in Commerce from Grove City College from 1946 to 1950. He received his Master’s Degree in Mathematics from the State University of New York in Buffalo, NY from 1962 to 1965.

He was a Mathematics teacher at Franklin Area High School before his retirement in 1987. He loved teaching and always took great pride in his students.

In his spare time, Bob loved sports and being active. He was a basketball player in Oil City High School, during his time at Grove City College, and was on the Traveler’s Team. He won many awards for running, including marathon medals. Up until the time of his death, he was still running three miles a day.

Bob was also a lover of nature and faithfully made sure to feed the birds every day, but his true love was mathematics, as he was always calculating something that caught his interest at that moment.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joan Ungren of Kenneth City, FL; his daughter, Cathleen Miller and her husband, Jeff, of Endicott, NY, who will both miss him dearly.

As per the family’s request, there will be no visitation.

Robert will be laid to rest at Grove Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made in Robert’s honor to the Oil City YMCA, 7 Petroleum Street, Oil City, PA 16301, and/or to the Venango County Humane Society, 286 South Main Street, Seneca, PA 16346.
