Local Volunteers Clean Up Rail 66 Trail Following Storm

CLARION CO., Pa. (EYT) — The segment of the Rail 66 Country Trail that was closed following last Saturday’s storm has reopened thanks to the efforts of local volunteers.

According to Kathy Linnan, of the Rail 66 Association, about nine volunteers came together on Monday to clean up the trail from the storm.

The main damage was at the intersection of the trail and the Old Fryburg Road in Lucinda. There were more than 20 trees that came down on the trail, mostly between Shoup Road and Old Fryburg Road, in a recently paved area.

The trail itself did not sustain damage from the storm, but with so many trees down, there was still a lot of clean up needed.

“A great group of volunteers were able to completely clear the trail, and it is now open and ready for use, though we recommend people be aware there are some uneven surfaces right now in the Lucinda area,” Linnan told exploreClarion.com.

According to Linnan, the Rail 66 Association is also currently hoping to hear about some possible grant money in September to help finish paving the next leg of the trail. If they receive the grant, the next step will be paving from Leeper to the Forest County Line.

When that paving will be completed depends on both the grant and the weather.

“I don’t know if that would take place in the fall or in the spring, but if I had to guess, I’d say it would more likely be in the spring.”

Another addition coming to the trail soon will be a system of counters to help measure how many people are utilizing the trail.

“If we had a better estimate of usage, which I think has been really good, it could allow us to apply for and receive more funding for the trail,” Linnan noted.

Organizers recently added new flowers at the Lucinda Rail Station and at the Marianne Trailhead, as well as “Little Free Libraries” at the Marianne Trailhead, the Lucinda Trailhead, and the Leeper Trailhead to help garner interest in the trail.
