According to police, Chief Russ Cataldo of Knox Volunteer Fire Company requested assistance from a Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal in determining the origin and cause of a fire that damaged a three-story residential structure on Best Avenue in Knox Borough around 9:05 p.m. on Thursday, November 14.

The third-floor resident, a 59-year-old Knox man, who became entrapped and was rescued by firefighters and flown to a Pittsburgh hospital, remains in critical condition.

Police say the fire has been determined to have originated in the kitchen area of the first-floor apartment. The fire then vented through a window under the exterior enclosed wooden stairway to the third floor, which became engulfed, trapping the resident.

The cause remains under investigation.

The other victims of the fire are listed as a 34-year-old Knox man, a 34-year-old Knox woman, a four-year-old male, and a 27-year-old Strattanville man. None of the other victims were injured.

Damage to the structure is estimated to be at least $200,000.00.
