Investigators Confirm Accidental Drowning in Death of Shevy McGiffin
CLARION COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) – A local girl whose body was found Sunday afternoon near the Clarion River died as the result of an accidental drowning, according to Clarion-based State Police.
Shevy Lynn McGiffin, 13, of Clarion, left her Fraternity Drive home on foot Friday at approximately 7:15 p.m. to go to the Dollar General Store on South Fifth Avenue in Clarion Township.
“Investigators determined that she had, in fact, been inside the store shortly before her disappearance, and an extensive search was conducted to locate the missing teenager,” according to a press release issued early Monday evening by Clarion-based State Police Tpr. Morris.
McGiffin’s body was found by Clarion Fire & Hose Company No. 1 around 3:50 p.m. Sunday in Trout Run. The stream is located between Dollar General Store/Comet Grocery Store and McGiffin’s home. The fire company was part of an active search crew that was scouring the area.
“An autopsy conducted today revealed that the teenager had drowned and that no foul play is suspected in her death,” said Tpr. Morris in the release.
Clarion County Coroner Terry Shaffer said the autopsy was performed by Dr. Eric Vey late Monday morning at the Erie County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities say scrapes and bruises found on her body were likely caused by being swept downstream.
